Shane Adamson, MS, LCSW

Shane received his BS degree in Family Science from Brigham Young University in 1993. He completed a dual track masters degree in clinical and administrative Social Work from the University of Utah in 1995. Shane worked at Youth Service center counseling troubled youth. He worked at Valley Mental Health counseling those with serious mental health conditions, and later he reached his dream of starting an out-patient counseling clinic called Family First Counseling.

In 2007, Shane began to observe increasing numbers of youth and adult clients struggling with compulsive sexual behavior problems. Shane was hired at LifeSTAR, a specialized treatment program for pornography, sex addiction, and unwanted sexual compulsive behavior. In 2009, Shane moved to Texas to co-direct LifeSTAR Dallas with Mark Bird. Shane observes the damage that pornography and compulsive sexual behaviors have on individuals, couples, and families. Shane believes it is important to create a three-part treatment plan: (1) help the addict understand addiction and develop a personal recovery plan, (2) help the partner of an addict heal from trauma and loss, and (3) help the marriage heal from betrayal and disconnection. Shane notices that clients feel hope and motivation when a map of healing and recovery becomes clear.

Shane is a marriage advocate and in an effort to increase his skills in couples counseling he has received advanced training in Emotional Focused Therapy (EFT). EFT provides a clear concept of why marital distress happens and offers a map of 9 steps to re-establish a bond of love and trust. Twenty years of research shows that 75% of couples receiving EFT therapy move from distress to recovery and 90% of couples report a significant improvement in their marriage. Recently, research is showing how EFT is effective with other problems related to disconnection. When Shane is not working, he enjoys date nights with his wife, outings with his family, and relaxing with a good book or movie. Shane volunteers within his church and community. Shane's personal interests are golfing, photography, technology gadgets and the great outdoors.
